3 Important Uses Of Extrusion Profiles

Extrusion of a shaped product with a variety of configurations that does not include sheet or film products is known as extrusion profiles. Profile extrusion is used for making hollow forms as well as solid forms. Products like different variety of tubes, window frames, and vehicle door seals are made by this method. A pin or a mandrel is used inside a die to make hollow shapes. Multiple pins are used to make multiple hollow sections. For the product to maintain shape and not collapse under vacuum, a source of air is required to create these hollow shapes. To make a product with 2 or more materials, co-extrusion method is used. Each extruder feeds a different material or different version of the same material into a central co-extrusion die. Different uses of extrusion are:

  • Window: Frames and other profiles are needed to assemble windows. Complex shapes with multiple hollows in the interior parts are required to improve structural strength and thermal performance.
  • Fence: Hollow profiles with internal ribs (to provide internal strength) are made in forms of pickets, boards and posts to build low maintenance privacy.
  • Plastic profile extrusion includes agricultural land drainage tubing, automotive body side molding and bumper strips, electrical conduit and cable protectors, moldings and trim for both interior and exterior finishing, gutters and downspouts, window treatments like blinds and curtain tracks, ‘zip’ strip on reusable plastic bag, furniture edge trim, medical blood and IV tubing, drinking straws, dip tubes used in spray bottles and refrigerator seals, other trim pieces and accessories.
